Anomaly scan, also commonly called level II scans or TIFFA (Targeted Imaging for Fetal Anomalies) scans, are among the most important scans of the second trimester. The mid-pregnancy scan provides a close look at your baby and your womb (uterus). The procedure is performed between 18 and 20 weeks of pregnancy. This scan is used to check if your baby is developing normally and to check where the placenta lies.
It can be very exciting to see your baby on a screen. You can also bring along your husband, another family member, or your children. Make sure to ask when you make your appointment. You may not be allowed to bring family members or attendants into the ultrasound room.
Most of your baby’s vital organs have already developed halfway through your pregnancy. At this stage, all pregnant women undergo a scan so if there is a problem, precautions can be taken.
During this examination, your doctor will measure all the baby’s organs. Scans can be used to:
Monitor your baby’s growth and fetal movements
Make sure your baby’s internal organs are developing properly
Find out if your baby has certain birth defects
Calculate the amount of amniotic fluid
Check the umbilical cord and placenta
Check for soft chromosomal abnormalities
Make sure your cervix is measured and the birth canal is wide
Check your uterine blood flow
